The Giver - Lois Lowery Book #1

          The Criticly acclaimed book The Giver by the author Louis Lowery paints a vivid story in its readers' head of the odd and bizzar, yet increadibly organized society in humanity's future. Even from the first few pages and chapters of the book the reader is immeadiatly told of the kind of world they are going to be in from the innane, vast and highly enforced list of rules, their increadible medicine and techknowledgy, to the so overly protected people of the "Community" that they are robbed of colors, climate and music.The Giver's story follows that of Jonas a seemingly ordanary boy living within the gates of the Community. Like any other of the age of  12, Jonas is assaighned to a fammily unit consisting of his father and mother and little sister lilly and soon will be assighned an apprenticeship where he will specificly study the job or role that he will fufill in his community untill he is sent to the house of old and well... "realessed". From the day you are born untill the day you are assighned a job, all citizens of the community's  age is importance. Unless you are with your Familly unit, kids in the community are pretty much always together with others of their age, also throught ones life they are given new objects and responsibilitys (i.e. When they are 9 you get a bike, and when they become 12 you participate in the ceromony of 12) and are constently monitered on factors like how they act, their physical streangth and how they preform in school whitch will produce the finnal verdict of the job that they will be assinghned at the ceromony of 12. Jonas who has never had even the slightest idea of what he where to become, he had always felt like a very average individuall, he had friends like fiona and asher, he was an average schooler and dident really seem to shine or stand out in any real way. He was 11 and soon to be 12 when his fate would be given to him. However one day something starnge had happened while he was playing catch with his friend Asher, he had a vary rare expirence called "seeing beyond" where for just a breif moment he saw color. and because of that, Jonas would later be assighned the role of the next Receiver after the failure of the last one. The Recevier the secound most honored and respected job besides the Giver. As the Receiver Jonas would be allowed to lie and brake rules (whitch just shows the responsibilitys of the job) but at a price, for training as a Receiver to take the place as the next Giver is the most painful and dreadful job that anyone can comprehend. On Jonas's first day as the Receiver he met the current Giver a very wise, kind, and sad old man that taught Jonas what his job was. The job of the Giver is basicly to harbor all of mankinds memorys of life before communitys for two reasons, 1: if their is a problem or a rule change is to happen, the council of elders would consol the Giver for his imput on what to do, after all he is the wisest. 2:for some unexplaind reson all memory in a community cannot leave the community, so if a giver where to die or leave, all memorys would be left in the community and fill the heads of all the fragil minded people that would crack if the every thought of war and poverty. By using some unexplaind Magical power or something the giver thransports memorys to Jonas every day. Jonas's firts memory was of  a sled ride and snow, the giver wanted to start Jonas with Happy memorys and build up to the harder ones, this is because when you are give a memory, it does not just pop up in your head, you must acually ecpirence it first hand. After a few weeks of happy memories jonas begins to want to be able to share the memorys of colorful vibrent worlds and feels that it is unjust that people are robbed of this. Soon enough jonas is introduced to his first painfull memory- a sunburn. This training conntinues for a while, every day the giver would pass some of his memories to Jonas for months, every day the giver and Jonas would become greater friends, and every day Jonas would become wiser and stronger. One day Jonas asked the Giver about the Reciever that had failed before him, the giver had decided that he was ready to learn what being released (whitch is what happens to the old and those who break rules). The Giver told the story of the prevoius Receiver, a Girl name Rosemarry and how she had been excellent at her job, untill she expirenced her first bad memory, and she snapped. Rose marry had become depressed was never happy even when she expirenced the best memories. And how one day she had applyed for realese. Then the giver played a video from one of the cameras showing what realese really was, an infant was sat down at a table and was given a shot, moments later it died. Now with Jonas knowing this he was furious and greif strucken, realizeing how evil the community can be. That night the Jonas and the Giver devised a plan to give the people the memories and to save everyone from a terrible future and instead show them the goods and bads of life. The plan was that Jonas would sacrifice himself by leaving the communinity, while the memories spreadback to everyone, the giver would stay behind to calm down the inevitable panick the community will have. Then the next morining the plan is put into action with jonas entering the wilderness and go as far away as he can. Finnally the story beautiful and poeticly ends with Jonas climbing a snowy hill, hearing music in the distance and trying his best to get to it.

         Two connections i have with the book is 1; it reminds me of another amazing bookthat take place in a simmilar setting. In the book 1984 by George Orwell, because like the Giver, it takes place in the future  (or at least 1984 did thake place in the future when i was realesed in 1949). and a future with a lot of cencoreship and laws. Also while there wasent any charrecters the i would say fully embodyed my self their are some expirences some charrecters had that I could realate to. For exsample, when Rose marry snapped I felt a lot of sympath to her because Things like that have happened to me. a while ago I have expirenced very depresing and stressfull things and sometimes I wasent prepared and these things hit me full force leaving me depressed for a while.

          I would recomend this book to 1:Anyone that has not lived in isolation and at home 24/7 Aka has gone outside before and expirenced nature And 2: artistic people because in this book you will be able to understand what its like without living with nature and withough color and emotion. And finnally 3: people who like sci-fi, because while this book does have some sci-fi tones, it is also very unique and refreashing and i definatly recomend you check it out.
