It's Kind Of A Funny Story - Delilah

          It's Kind Of A Funny Story, a New York Times bestseller written by Ned Vizzini, is quite the contrary of a funny story. In it, Vizzini finds a way to write about some of the many struggles a New York City teenager goes through in a very clever and insightful  manner. Although this may technically be about a boy struggling with depression, what you really take away from this novel is the desire to live life and the role that hope can play while everything else may be breaking down. Craig has just gotten into one of the most prestigious high schools in the city, though not without toil. The pressure of friendships, of relationships, and school work just takes over. Ned Vizzini explores the idea that nothing is worth it. To Craig, it all seemed pointless. He realizes that compared to the other kids, he's just average. After a suicidal episode one night, he unknowingly checks himself into a mental institution in his neighborhood. His short stay there allows him to understand his thoughts and face them head on.
          This is an amazing book written from Vizzini's own reality. He spent some time in a psychiatric hospital himself, which really gives his story an edge because of all the truth in it. Unfortunately the author of this incredibly moving tale took his own life at 32. His writing connects to the fact  that  this is happening. Society has expectations that are hard to live up to. Not everything is as easy as the movies may seem. 
          Although the true meaning of this novel may have a dark side, it's written in such a way that you can't help but laugh. The convenient placings of light humor throughout the novel make this less about depression then about saving. I would recommend this book to anyone that might be struggling with their own thoughts. It is also a great way of understanding what one goes through when they are having a hard time.
