Brotherband Chronicles by John Flanagan

The Brotherband Chronicles starts out in the land of Skandia where a crew of raiders are raiding a town. on the raid a man named mikkel is killed by a spear. On the way back to Skandia the ship is caught in a storm and the mast is ripped of it's place and is going to bring the ship down. Thorn tries to cut it loose and ends up getting a part of his arm cut off to save his life. When they get home to Skandia after the raid Thorn becomes a alcoholic. 6 years after the raid Katrina, Mikkel's wife finds Thorn unconscious next to her house. She orders her son Hal to throw a bucket of water on him, who later agrees to help her around the eating house and to help Hal through boy hood. 12 years after the raid Hal is 16 and old enough to take part of brotherband training in which he and his brotherband will compete with the other bands to be the winner.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure. This book reminds me of The Unwanteds in which a group no one wanted to be a part of ended up be the winner.
