The book "The cage" by Ruth Minsky Sender is a beautiful, deep, emotional memoir about her and her brothers life in the Lodz Ghetto of Poland, then in Auschwitz, Mittelstiene, and finally to Grafenort labor camps. After their mother is taken away by the Nazi's, Riva and her brothers hang on to her brave words and hope to endure the conditions in the Lodz Ghetto. After her younger brother Laibele dies after a long fight with tuberculosis, Riva vows to take care of her brothers to her death. Soon Riva and her brothers are sent to Auschwitz and separated. At the Mittelstiene labor camp Riva's powerful words are written into poems on paper bags and read aloud to all the women in Riva's bunk filling everyone with hope and strength. Everyday her and the other workers go out everyday to dig holes in the ground, fighting through heat and sickness she shows the true human resilience and strength. The book is a testament to the strength of the human spirit, and how much hope a young woman can have even though her world is collapsing in front of her. Her memory of her family keeps her going and gives her strength. This book is real life because the holocaust happened and many children and adults are going through the struggles like this everyday like the Syrian Refugee crisis and the war raging in many countries. I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a strong read, filled with tears and laughter. Reading this book and being a jewish teenager made me feel proud to be jewish and to represent all my ancestors who have died fighting for our freedom. How we survived this horrible event and came out stronger than ever. The Nazi's wanted us to be dead but we survived and are here to tell the story. It still pains me to know that humans would treat other humans that way. This book was one of the best books that I have ever read and brought me to tears and I suggest it to everyone.
