"Like No Other" By Una LaMarche

Izabella Orozco

"Like No Other" is a compelling book by Una LaMarche. It's a story about

two lovers from completely different worlds. The main characters Devorah, a 16 year old who is part of a strict Jewish-Hasidic family, and Jaxon, a 16 year old African-American. By chance, Devorah and Jaxon get trapped in an elevator during the middle of a hurricane. After a couple of minutes of talking, though it took some time for the conversation to start, they almost immediately feel emotions for each other, learning they have many similarities and that they're neighbors. In Devorah's culture, by even being alone with Jaxon is disobeying laws.
They start meeting in secret, but soon one of Devorah's relatives was becoming suspicious of her disappearances, leading to questioning and "stalking". They soon got caught, resulting in Jaxon getting beat up and Devorah being sent to Hasidic rehab.
Though I did find most of the book interesting and tragic, in my personal opinion I found it very predictable. I was able to predict what was gonna happen in the next chapter very easily, a typical "forbidden love" type of story. That's not to say the book was terrible, it was very well written with great characters and plot. I would recommend this book to people who enjoy romance and predictable books, which personally is not my favorite but I'm guessing some people would enjoy.
