Island of the Blue Dolphins is a tragic and absolutely amazing story about 12 year old Karna, based on a true story it goes through her journey of loss and loneliness being stranded on her island (somewhat) by herself for 6 years.
After the Aleuts came to the Island of the Blue Dolphins, hunting almost all of the sea otters and killing many of the tribesmen, including Karana's father who was the chief of the tribe, Chief Chowig. The people of her tribe feared for their lives, believing they would come again. They all agree to retreat to a land the new chief, Chief Kimki, had once visited as a boy. As they are leaving on the ship Chief Kimki sent, Karana slowly realizes her brother Ramo isn't on board. Looking back on the island, there she sees her brother running towards the ship, but it's to far to turn back. Though she was attemped to be held back, she jumped into the ocean and swims towards the island to aid her brother, starting her adventure.
I thought this book was astonishing, I found myself to be eager to find out what happens to Karana and Rontu-Aru after the cliffhanger ending. It was wonderfully written with the perfect blend of mystery, excitement, and tragedy. I would recommend this book for anyone who enjoys historical-nonfiction books with tragedy and adventure.
