The lost boy by Greg Ruth
A boy named Nate moves with his parents into a new house. he meets a young girl named Tabitha who is the same age as him. In the attic he discovers a dusty old tape recorder that belonged to a lost boy named Walter, and it had Nate's name on it. The rest of the book is about Nate's search for a magical key and to keep it safe from Walter, who has become evil because of the child abuse Walter faced as a kid. There are magical talking animals and bugs who keep people from entering the magical forest. Nate and Tabitha take on the adventure and mystery of finding Walter. Walter was trapped in all his anger and pain that he grew magical wood on his skin that preserved his body for years. at the end of the book Walt becomes suicidal and wants to drop into a bottomless bit but Nate caught him and would not let him fall. As Walter's anger turns into sadness the wood slowly chips off. once Tabitha was alone with Nate, Nate gets the magic key to guard. but little did they know that Nate and Tabitha will become guardians of the key and they will have to protect from the shadows in the next book.
This connects to life because the emotions reminded me of myself, I to once felt the same way as Walter. anger acts as a wall to keep away the sadness the sadness causes suicidal thoughts and feelings and can be fixed by love like in the book when Nate saved Walter and gave him a big hug and let him cry in his arms.
I would recommend this book to young adults or teens or anyone who doesn't prefer chapter books but loves fantasy mystery.
