The Big Field by Mike Lupica is about a kid named Hutch who wants to play baseball. Hutch has two conflicts throughout the story such as with his dad, who has neglected him for 5 years. The second conflict is with a kid named Daryl, because Daryl is so sure of himself and he is also a big jerk. Daryl is always is saying he is going to make it into the MLB.
I enjoyed this book because I really enjoy sports, especially baseball. I think this book is well written and Mike Lupica knows how to write how a kid actually thinks. My favorite character in the book was Cody, Hutch’s best friend, because he always was positive and had a good attitude and never got mad at Hutch when he really messed up. Things end up working out between Daryl and Hutch. Daryl became really nice and they actually kind of became friends, which was surprising because you’d never expect that because they hated each other in the beginning. I think it was about jealousy. Hutch apologized because they were teammates and they didn’t want to effect their team in a negative way. Nothing was really worked out with Hutch and his dad, but the book ended with Hutch hugging his dad because he won the little league world series and his dad was proud of him.
There were some funny parts and there were some dumb parts like bad dialogue, but all in all, I liked the book. It was entertaining and kept on making you want to read more. I would recommend this to anyone who likes sports, especially if you play baseball.
